Perhaps it's something a bit off-beat for this website, but like anything, Jazz sprung from a specific set of economic, social and political moments.
Black nationalism and the revolution in music by Frank Kofsky is an avowedly Marxist historical analysis of the roots of Jazz and it makes a fascinating read. As a reviewer on Amazon put it:
